Holly, Granada, McClave boys win season openers

The 2018-19 basketball season officially got underway for teams in the area.

It was a successful debut for the No. 7 state-ranked Holly Wildcats in Class 2A as they went on the road on Saturday and defeated Swallows Charter Academy,84-49, in a District 6 opener in Pueblo West.

Holly Wildcats 2018 Basketball TeamIn the first quarter, Holly held a 17-11 lead before the Wildcats poured in 33 points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 50-29 at halftime.

Holly outscored the Spartans, 24-6, in the third quarter to pull away further, 74-35, in the lopsided victory.

Jarrett Rushton scored 25 points for the Wildcats including five 3’s. Michael Rushton followed with 17 points with two 3’s. Brigden Parker added 12 points, Gus Dominguez had 9 points, and Austin Jensen scored 7 points.

“We didn’t know what to expect but Swallows Charter was a good team,” said Holly coach Dusty Heck. “Our guys came out fired up and ready to go. We used our size and length to our advantage.”

Heck noted that senior Austin Jensen, who was seeing his first varsity action since he transferred to Holly last year, suffered a wrist injury that will keep him out the lineup at least four to six weeks.

Holly plays twice this week when they travel to play Springfield on Friday, Dec. 7 with action getting started at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats will host their first home game with Rocky Ford in another District 6 contest on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m.

Granada jumped out to a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Bobcats held a 33-24 lead at halftime and a 46-32 lead after the third quarter.

The Bobcats did not win a game last season after going 0-20.

Granada will compete in the Border Wars Tournament hosted by Syracuse High School. The Bobcats play Johnson, Ks. at 3:00 on Tuesday, Dec. 4; Tribune, Ks. at 6:00 on
Friday, Dec. 7; and Elkhart, Ks. at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The Wiley Panthers lost a close game to Flagler/Hi-Plains, 46-44, on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Flagler/Hi-Plains took a 10-3 lead after the first quarter and held a slim 18-17 lead at halftime.

After the third quarter, Flagler/Hi-Plains remained on top 39-34. Wiley outscored Flagler/Hi-Plains, 15-12, in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough.

This week, the Panthers host Cheyenne Wells on Tuesday, Dec. 4 and then will entertain No. 2 state-ranked Kit Carson on Friday, Dec. 7 at 4:00.

McCLAVE CARDINALSThe McClave Cardinals won their season opener with a 79-62 victory at Stratton/Liberty.

Cal Garcia and Karl McKenzie paced the Cardinals with 24 points apiece.

McClave will next compete in the Border Wars Tournament hosted by Syracuse High School this week.

The Cardinals play Tribune, Ks. at 3:00 on Tuesday, Dec. 4; Syracuse, Ks. at 6:00 on Friday, Dec. 7; and Johnson, Ks. at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.
